LAN-free backup is the process of backing up server data to a centralized storage device rather than moving it across a local-area network (LAN). Transmitting all such data over the LAN can slow down the network.
LAN-free backup can be conducted through a storage area network (SAN) or with a tape device directly attached to the storage subsystem. Advantages of LAN-free backup include shorter backup and recovery times and less disruption to other systems and applications.
